20 Pro-Biafra protesters denied bail, set to be sentenced to death if found guilty

Yesterday, 20 supporters of Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) facing trial before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, were denied bail. .

The 20 of them were charged with conspiracy and treason, after protesting recently in Port Harcourt, in solidarity with the Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, who is also still languishing in jail after being arrested in Nigeria..

The trial Chief Magistrate, Andrew Jaja, stated that the court lacked jurisdiction to entertain the matter based on Section 118 of the Criminal Code. He said they would be convicted to death, if found guilty and referred their case to the Department of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice.

The suspects chanted war songs that Hausa is not part of Biafra, which caused panic in the neighborhood and they also willfully and unlawfully damaged the Nigerian flag, which was hoisted at Zenith Bank Plc, Ikoku Branch in Port Harcourt. .

Both offenses are punishable under sections 37(1) and 451 of the criminal code, Cap C38 laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2004. Those arraigned are: Benson Sunday (21), Emmanuel Ali (25), Ukeme Monday (32), Chibuzo Ezechina (33), Charles Eze (29), Egbo Okechukwu (24)
